Are Titanium Bolts Stronger Than OEM Steel Bolts? (The Real Answer for E-Moto Riders)

You've put serious money into your build. The last thing you want is a bolt seizing mid-season, a rotor bolt backing out on the trail, or a caliper bolt corroding to the point where removal strips the head. So when people ask whether titanium hardware is actually worth it — here's the honest answer.

The Strength Numbers

Grade 5 titanium (6AL-4V) has a tensile strength of around 895–950 MPa. Most OEM e-moto bolts are Class 8.8 or 10.9 steel, which lands in the 800–1040 MPa range. On raw tensile strength alone, titanium is roughly comparable — sometimes slightly better than 8.8, sometimes slightly below 10.9.

If you're expecting titanium to be dramatically stronger than steel bolt-for-bolt, that's not quite the story.

So What's the Real Advantage?

The headline number that actually matters is strength-to-weight ratio. Titanium delivers similar clamping force at roughly 40–45% less weight than steel. On a full bolt kit — rotor bolts, caliper bolts, axle hardware, suspension linkage, body bolts — that adds up to real, measurable weight savings across the bike.

For e-moto builds where every gram counts, that's not a marketing claim. It's physics.

Why Titanium Actually Wins on an E-Moto

Raw tensile strength is only part of the picture. The two properties that matter most for light electric moto use are:

Fatigue resistance under vibration. E-motos generate constant vibration through the motor, drivetrain, and suspension. Steel bolts — especially lower-grade OEM hardware — can develop micro-cracks over time under cyclic loading. Grade 5 titanium has superior fatigue resistance, meaning it holds up better under the repeated stress cycles that come with aggressive riding.

Zero corrosion. Steel bolts rust. Even stainless steel can corrode in the right conditions. Titanium forms a passive oxide layer that makes it essentially immune to rust, salt, and moisture. If you ride in wet conditions, wash your bike regularly, or live somewhere with road salt, titanium hardware stays clean and torques correctly for the life of the bike. OEM steel bolts often seize, strip, or corrode to the point where removal becomes a project.

The Bottom Line

Titanium bolts aren't stronger than steel in every measurable way — but they're not supposed to be. They're lighter, more fatigue-resistant, and corrosion-proof. For e-moto hardware that sees vibration, weather, and repeated removal for maintenance, that combination beats raw tensile strength every time.

If you're building a performance Surron LBX, Ultra Bee, or Talaria and you're still running OEM steel hardware, you're leaving weight on the table and adding a maintenance headache you don't need.
