Formula EB7 E-Moto Racing Brakes: Common Questions Answered - Titanium Surron

Formula EB7 E-Moto Racing Brakes: Common Questions Answered

The Formula EB7 is one of the strongest plug-and-play brake upgrades available for the original class of lightweight e-motos. At Titanium Surron we stock the complete front + rear set (part numbers FM6107-EMT / FM6108-EMT) and get a lot of the same questions from riders moving off stock mineral-oil systems. Here’s a clear breakdown of the most common ones.

What exactly is the Formula EB7?

The EB7 is a purpose-built hydraulic disc brake system engineered in Italy specifically for lightweight e-motos that use a 74.2mm post-mount spacing. Key hardware includes:

  • CNC-machined aeronautic-grade 7075 aluminum calipers
  • Multi-piston setup: 4 × 22mm front / 2 × 22mm rear
  • Forged aluminum master cylinders and adjustable levers
  • Steel-braided hoses with PTFE inner liner
  • Sintered pads as standard

The system runs DOT 4 fluid and is sold only as a matched front-and-rear set.

Which bikes does the EB7 fit?

It is designed as a direct replacement on platforms with 74.2mm caliper mounts, including:

  • Surron Light Bee (LBX, LBS, L1E)
  • Talaria Sting MX3 / MX4
  • E-Ride Pro SS 2.0
  • Ventus V1 / V1+
  • Rerode R1 / R1+
  • Other compatible 74.2mm mount platforms

It is not the correct choice for newer higher-power platforms that use larger mounts — those take the EB9 series.

How do I confirm the EB7 will fit my bike?

Measure the center-to-center distance between the two threaded mounting holes on the fork leg or adapter after removing the stock caliper:

  • 74.2mm → EB7
  • 90 / 95.5 / 99.5mm → EB9 (different versions)

A digital caliper is ideal; a careful ruler measurement within ±0.5mm is usually sufficient. If you have changed forks, wheels, or adapters, measure again before ordering.

What’s the difference between the EB7 and the earlier Formula E-Moto brakes?

The EB7 is a clear step up from the original Formula E-Moto brake system:

  • Larger 22mm pistons vs. 18mm on the earlier model
  • CNC-machined 7075 caliper body instead of the previous design
  • Bigger master cylinders
  • Steel-braided lines with PTFE liner
  • Higher overall stiffness and power while maintaining good modulation

Calipers are not interchangeable between the original Formula E-Moto brakes and the new EB7/EB9 generation.

How does the EB7 compare to the EB9?

Both share the same master cylinder, piston size, and pad surface area — so peak power is very similar. The main differences are physical:

  • EB7 = slim design for the original lightweight class (74.2mm mount)
  • EB9 = wider caliper and thicker pads for higher-power bikes with larger mounts

Choose based on your bike’s mount spacing — not on which one sounds more powerful.

Why DOT 4 fluid instead of mineral oil?

DOT 4 has a significantly higher boiling point than the mineral oil used in most stock e-moto systems. Under repeated hard stops or aggressive trail riding, mineral oil can heat up and fade. DOT 4 stays more consistent under load — which is why Formula chose it for both the EB7 and EB9.

Are the brakes pre-bled and ready to install?

Yes — they leave the factory assembled and pre-bled. If you need to shorten the hoses for a cleaner fit, a proper bleed is required afterward. Formula recommends having hose cutting and bleeding done by an experienced mechanic or authorized dealer for best results and safety.

What about rotor size and adapters?

The EB7 works with 220mm rotors (and larger with adapters):

  • Running a 220mm disc on the EB7 typically requires a 203mm adapter
  • Larger discs (240mm, etc.) need the corresponding step-up adapter
  • Maximum rotor thickness is 3.2mm

Always confirm clearance with your specific fork, fender, and frame if you are upsizing rotors.

What pads does it use and are replacements available?

The EB7 ships with sintered pads chosen for durability and consistent bite in off-road conditions. Replacement Formula EB7 Racing Brake Pad Kits are available separately on our site.

Do I lose the stock brake-light sensors?

Most aftermarket hydraulic systems — including the EB7 — do not retain the electronic brake-light sensors found on many stock e-motos. If a working brake light is required for your use case, plan accordingly before installing.

Installation and Bedding-In Tips

  • Self-center the calipers: Mount loosely, spin the wheel, and let the caliper float to center on the rotor before final torque. This eliminates most rubbing issues.
  • Bed in the pads properly: New pads and rotors need a series of progressive stops from moderate speed without locking the wheel. Formula recommends roughly 50 controlled decelerations around 30 km/h in a safe area.
  • Use fresh DOT 4 fluid from a sealed container when bleeding. Never reuse old fluid.
  • Keep fluid and grease off rotors and pads. Contaminated pads must be replaced — they cannot be cleaned back to full performance.

Why Buy from Titanium Surron?

We keep the EB7 in stock in Chicago and ship within one business day — no drop-shipping delays, no waiting on overseas inventory. You also get direct access to riders who run these parts daily on Surron, Talaria, and similar platforms.
