Installing titanium hardware isn't quite the same as swapping in steel bolts — and torque is where it matters most. Titanium is more elastic than steel and has different friction characteristics, so using the OEM steel spec blindly can get you into trouble. Here's how to do it right.
Run lower torque than the steel spec
Because titanium behaves differently under load and anti-seize changes the friction at the threads, many sources recommend running 15–25% lower torque than the OEM steel specification when using anti-seize — then verifying clamp load. The goal is proper clamping force, not just hitting a number on the wrench.
Use the right tools and method
- Always use a calibrated torque wrench. Guessing by feel is the fastest way to overtighten.
- Follow a staged tightening method — bring fasteners to roughly 50% torque first, then to full torque.
- Re-check critical fasteners after the first 50 miles to confirm they've held.
