Why You Must Use Anti-Seize on Titanium Bolts (Galling Prevention)

Titanium bolts are an excellent upgrade for your e-moto — but there's one critical installation step that many riders skip: anti-seize compound. Skip it, and you risk galling — a form of cold-welding that can permanently seize your bolt in place.

What Is Galling?

Galling occurs when two metal surfaces under pressure break down their protective oxide layers and the metals literally fuse together at a microscopic level. Titanium has a particularly strong tendency to gall, especially in these combinations:

  • Titanium-on-titanium threads
  • Titanium threading into aluminum
  • Titanium threading into steel

Once galling occurs, the bolt is often impossible to remove without damaging the surrounding material. It's one of the most common — and most preventable — titanium installation mistakes.

What Anti-Seize to Use

Choose based on your application and temperature range:

  • Nickel-based anti-seize: Best all-around choice for most e-moto applications. High temperature rated, compatible with titanium.
  • Molybdenum disulfide (moly) paste: Excellent for high-load, lower-temperature joints.
  • Copper-based anti-seize: Good general purpose, widely available.

Apply a thin, even coat to the bolt threads before installation. You don't need much — a little goes a long way.

Torque Adjustment Required

This is critical: anti-seize changes the friction coefficient of the joint. The same torque value produces higher preload when lubricated versus dry. As a general rule, reduce your target torque by approximately 15–25% compared to OEM dry steel torque specs when using anti-seize on titanium.

Always use a calibrated torque wrench and tighten in stages.

Bottom Line

Anti-seize is not optional with titanium — it's a required part of proper installation. Treat it the same way you'd treat thread locker on critical fasteners: non-negotiable.
